What is Therapeutic Mentoring?
Therapeutic mentoring is a 0ne-to-one strength-based support service for youth ages 3-21. Therapeutic mentors work with youth and families on a specific goal determined on youths behavioral treatment plan. This service is designed to support youth who struggle with social skills, mental health, trauma, behavioral issues, etc.
TMs work with youth on skill-building, conflict resolution, coping skills, self-care, educational challenges, and more. TMs are also youth advocates and work closely with youths other providers to ensure youth receive adequate services and achieve personal goals.
Services can be provided in any setting where the youth resides, such as home, school, afterschool programs, and community. Therapeutic mentoring is a HUB-dependent service which means that youth must have an outside provider also providing care to youth to qualify for services. This provider can be as follows ( outpatient therapist, school counselor, Intensive care coordinator, or in-home therapist).
Mentors are required to follow the treatment plan as well as update goals and supporting paperwork pertaining to youths' treatment and review it with youth and family every 90days.
What is the Youth Mentoring Program?
The youth mentoring program is a step down from Therapeutic Mentoring. This service shares similar concepts; however, it is structured differently. Youth are paired with a Mentor who will work with youth on personal or educational goals. Mentors are positive role models and work with youth to increase skills, social skills, boundary-setting, time management etc.
Mentors and youth will meet in the community and attend agency skill-building and social events.
What is the difference between Therapeutic mentoring and the Youth mentoring program?
The difference between Therapeutic mentoring and the youth mentoring program is that Therapeutic mentoring is a HUB-dependent service, which means that medical necessity needs to be determined for youth to continue with services, and youth will need an outside provider. TMs are also required to create & update a treatment plan for youth every 90 days.
Youth enrolled in the Youth Mentoring program do NOT need an outside service, and medical necessity is not determined. Mentors still work with youth on skill-building and goal setting but will not be required to complete a treatment plan for youth. Both programs are similar; however, this program is structured differently from the Therapeutic mentoring program.
